What if rocks - Waswärewennsteine

What if I don't work on a flat surface?.

These little rocks are made with the embellisher and I want to continue doing them. They are lovely to write on and to do small stitcheries with a theme.

I used the watercolor technique of my other pieces and worked with silk and wool, from white to black.

Because I didn't have a black embroidery thread I used a knitting wool thread.

Was wäre wenn ich nicht auf einer flachen Oberfläche arbeite?

Diese kleinen Steine sind mit dem Embellisher gemacht und ich möchte mehr von ihnen machen. Sie sind ganz dafür geignet, Sätze darauf zu schreiben und sie zu besticken.

Ich habe die Aquarelltechnik von meinen anderen Stücken verwendet. Ich verwendete Seide und Wolle, von weiß bis schwarz.

Weil ich keinen Stickfaden hatte, habe ich einen Strang Strickwolle in schwarz verwendet.

What if I make totems with a story?

My quadruplets story isn't getting square or rectangular but quite long and it looks more of a totem to me. This is good thing. I liked this sentence in the Wikipedia:
"Totems are chosen arbitrarily for the sole purpose of making the physical world a comprehensive and coherent classificatory system" and this applies to my story (which is growing with every piece I sew)

Meine Vierlingsgeschichte ist nicht quadratisch oder rechteckig, sie wächst in der Länge. Sie schaut mehr wie ein Totem. Das finde ich gut. Ich mag den Satz in der Wikipedia:
"Totems werden arbiträr ausgesucht, mit dem einzigen Zweck, die physikalische Welt verständlich und koherent zu machen" uns dies paßt zu meine Geschichte (die mit jedem Stich wächst)

I found a good solution for the border of this piece, I thought what if I make a piping out of organza and I strand wool? I punched it all around and I love how it works! I could use it to frame pieces too. It is semi transparent and makes a nice edge.

Ich habe eine tolle Lösung für die Kante dieses Stückes. Ich dachte, was wäre wenn ich eine Paspel mit Organza und einen Wollstrang rund um das Stück mache? Ich habe sie rundhereum gepuncht und bin mit dem Ergebnis sehr zufrieden. Man kann sie auch um einzurahmen verwenden. Sie ist semitransparent und mach einen schönen Rand.

#6 Borders - Ränder

What if you cover the borders of a felted piece to make it more interesting? This allows me to give a kind of frame and also allows me to hang it from the main piece.

I'm always trying new possibilities of connections between pieces.

Was wäre wenn man die Ränder eines Filzstückes mit einem Stoffstreifen einfaßt, um diese interessanter zu machen? das ermöglicht eine Art Rahmen zu machen und auch das Stück vom Hauptbild zu hängen.

Ich suche immer nach Möglichkeiten, Verbindungen zu finden, um Stücke miteinander zu verbinden.

Here I made the same thing but I didn't stitched over the border of the fabric strip. As I had turned the fabric down, a very narrow standing frame was created around the white background. I like that.

Hier habe ich das Gleiche gemacht aber die Stiche nicht über den Randstoff geführt. Da ich den Stofstreifen nach innen eingeschlagen hatte, ein kleiner stehender Rand entsteht, der den weißen Hintergrund einrahmt. Es hat mir gefallen.

Whatiffing about felting fabric. I felted all pieces of fabric on this piece so that I hadn't to put a backing on them for stitching. I like to iron the pieces with the steam iron after felting so that they get a fabric quality before stitching.

Ich dachte, was wäre wenn ich die Stoffe filze, so dass ich sie sticken kann. Ich bügle das Stück nach dem Filzen, so dass es mehr Stoffqualitäten aufweist.

My husband brought me some wood pieces shaped like little houses (about 6"x6"- 15x15 cm) and I thought what if I combine the smoothness of felt with the wood.

I made this very little and fine stitching with silk threads and fine fabric and used some gel medium to glue it to the wood.

Mein Mann brachte mir einige Holzstücke, die wie Häuser aussahen. ca 15x15 cm. Ich dachte, was wäre wenn ich die Weichheit vom Filz mit dem Holz kombiniere.

Ich machte eine sehr feine Stickerei mit Seidenfäden und klebte sie mit Gel-Medium auf das Holz.

I used the same square I cut out of #1 as background for the face. I punched this one to an industrial felt band I bought in a garden & house center. I think it is used for insulation of some kind. You can punch and machine sew very well on it. It isn't that nice for hand stitching...
I also had to use two layers of it (I put the second one after stitching) so that it is sturdy enough to be sewn to the other rectangles.

Ich habe das Quadrat, das ich vom #1 über hatte, um den Hintergrund vom Gesicht zu machen. Ich punchte es zu einem Industriefilz, den ich in einem Baumarkt gekauft hatte. Ich glaube, man verwendet ihn als Isolierung für Rohre. Man kann gut auf ihn punchen und maschinsticken, aber nicht so gut handsticken... Ich habe auch ein zweites Stück vom Filz nach dem Sticken unterlegt, so dass alles mehr Körper hat.

Here I tried to do some machine stitching instead of hand stitching to draw a figure. I used the same background of #2.

Here habe ich versucht, mit der Maschine anstatt mit der Hand zu "zeichnen". Ich verwendete den gleichen Hintergrund wie in #2.

This was whatiffing if I followed the accidental contours of the punched wool and defined them with outline stitch the way I saw them. Also the seed stitches made the surfaces contrast more.

Ich dachte, was wäre wenn ich die zufälligen Konturen der gepunchten Wolle mit Rückstichen hervorbrachte und dadurch die Figuren, die ich darin sah herausarbeitete. Ich verwendete Saatstiche, um den Farbkontrast zwischen Figur und Hintergrund zu erhöhen.

Because I'm going to be in England this week I did some more what-ifs to keep pace with my agenda.

In this one I used a background of cheesecloth and wool and also appliqué from these dyed materials.

I whatiffed if the whipped spider wheel could also be done with chain stitches as a base (see drawing) and did some french knots to fill the space where I couldn't whip any more.

Weil ich nächste Woche in England sein werde, habe ich ein wenig vorgearbeitet.

Ich verwendete einen Hintergrund von Mull und Wolle und applizierte auch diese gefärbten Materialien.

Ich dachte was wäre wenn ich den überwendlichen Spinnenwebstich mit Kettstichen als Basis (s. Zeichnung) machte. Ich stickte französischen Knötchen im freien Bereich, wo ich nicht mehr den anderen Stich durchführen konnte.

This is the first "what if" of my new dictionary.

I already explained in my blog what this is about but I'm going to explain it once more here so that everybody can understand the project. Perhaps some people would like to join me because this project is not very work intensive and for the days you cannot do some whatiffing you can just punch a different piece of fabric onto the background to see how different qualities work! (this would allow you to keep pace because you can do these "fill" pieces as a batch).

The idea is to do a small piece 2"x3" every day of the year or till I have 368.
The pieces are done with the embellisher and different materials.
Each piece is a "what if".
With the 368 pieces I will sew a wallhanging of 23 x 16 pieces.
The size of the finished wallhanging will be 46" x 64", (115 cm x 160 cm).

This first piece is seen from the front and from the back. I used a very light fabric with a print and punched it to the front of a surface done with gray and white wool. I cut a window in the middle of the piece and put another piece of the same fabric behind it and punched it once more. If you did such a thing in a big wallhanging you would see light through the many windows.
I tried a whip stitch and a running stitch around the edge of the window to better attach the fabrics together and for decoration.
